The Penny Crane Award for Distinguished Service was established by the SIGUCCS board in 2000 to honor the memory of Penny Crane, an active SIGUCCS member from the mid-70’s until her untimely death in 1999. A special award was presented posthumously to Penny Crane at the 1999 SIGUCCS Fall Conference to honor her long-time service and contributions to SIGUCCS and ACM. Since then, the Penny Crane Award for Distinguished Service was established to recognize other individuals who have made significant contributions to SIGUCCS and computing in higher education.

Each year ACM SIGUCCS sponsors a competition to honor the best publications, websites and promotional material produced by university and college centers. The competition recognizes excellence in developing useful and attractive publications in a variety of media categories and provides SIGUCCS conference participants with an opportunity to review publications that may help them develop or enhance their own work. The winning entries are displayed during the conference for perusal by the conference participants.

SIGUCCS 2014 BYOD Speaker – Jeff Civillico

SIGUCCS 2014 is full of fantastic speakers, including Jeff Civillico from Win-Win Entertainment and The Quad Resort & Casino in Las Vegas!

Jeff is the Founder and President of Win-Win Entertainment, a non-profit which pairs performers willing to donate their time and talent with charity organizations in need of entertainment. Jeff is also ridiculous. He holds a world record for bungee jumping on his unicycle off a cliff in New Zealand, and goes “joggling” for fun. “Joggling” = juggling while jogging. He raised $5000+ as a team member of “Athletes for Special Kids” by joggling all 26.2 miles of the Disney Marathon.

Webinar: Forging a Global IT Community

Webinars are a great way to “stay connected between conferences” and experience some of the professional development opportunities that are provided through the SIGUCCS conferences. Our webinars are offered quarterly. Use this as an opportunity to participate as a team or individually. You will be able to connect to the audio portion using VoIP or a telephone.

Forging a Global IT Community

Our first fall webinar is Tuesday, October 7 at 12:00pm EST. Reserve your Webinar seat now at: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/836239712

How do you improve the IT experience of 50,000 students, 3,100 faculty, and 16,000 employees across 18 schools and colleges, 25 study away sites, and three campuses in New York City, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai? Find out how New York University developed a more holistic and coordinated approach to IT across all of NYU’s schools and locations by creating TorchTech, a volunteer-led IT community for NYU’s IT professionals. The community is self-organized, based on the needs of the community, and cuts across hierarchy and administrative departments and schools.

Evan SilbermanEvan Silberman is the 2014 Campus Technology Innovator of the Year in Leadership, Governance, and Policy, and the Assistant Director of Information Technology at the New York University Silver School of Social Work. At NYU, Evan founded TorchTech, a first-of-its-kind volunteer-led membership organization for IT professionals at NYU (with over 900 members across NYU’s global networked university). He is also chair of the NYU Chief Information Officers Council. Evan was recently awarded the prestigious NYU Give-A-Violet Award, and nominated for the NYU Team Achievement Award. Prior to his work at NYU, Evan was responsible for all Academic Technology at Yeshiva University; he was also a technical consultant to the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), is a certified Project Management Professional and a candidate for a M.A. in Educational Technology at the NYU, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.

This webinar is available to SIGUCCS members only; it’s only $25 to join, go to http://www.siguccs.org/join.shtml

Chat with the Chair: Mat Felthousen

I first became aware of SIGUCCS in 1996. I had just finished my BA, and graduated in another way also: I went from being a student employee to an administrator for about 120 student employees, essentially overnight. The User Services Conference, as it was called, was held in Chicago that year. I was ‘green’ in every sense; it was my first conference as a professional, and only the second time that I had ever travelled outside of my own time zone. Fran Versace, my manager at the time and who is still active in SIGUCCS, knew that it would be a valuable opportunity for someone who was just starting their career.

Mat FelthousenThe significance of all of this took years to sink in, and much has happened in the ensuing 18 years. I’ve been with three very different institutions, and have had the good fortune to learn from the successes and miscues from many leaders. The best took an interest in growing the people around them. Some call this altruism. To others, it is succession planning. Regardless of the motive, aside from the individual benefits, this trait advances the organization.

The lesson for me is that as we Build (our) Own Destiny in Salt Lake City, sometimes it takes a single act of mentoring to transform someone. Had it not been for Fran taking a chance on me, or introducing me to SIGUCCS, my career would be in a very different place. I may not have met dozens of people who I now consider friends, and have influenced me professionally and personally.

SIGUCCS has many strengths; one is the opportunity to develop long-term conversations with professionals in our field, with a broad perspective that comes from an international community. For decades these conversations have happened primarily at conferences or listservs. One of the efforts to foster these conversations year-round is the SIGUCCS Mentoring program, which is about enter its third year. This unique year-long program is available to all members (join now: http://www.siguccs.org/join.shtml), and is a centerpiece of our professional development offerings. It is an invaluable opportunity to gain insights, and to either advance in your career, or to help someone in achieving their goals.

SIGUCCS 2014 – Build Your Own Destiny

SIGUCCS is built around networking opportunities. As you build your destiny, take a moment to help someone with theirs. Perhaps there is someone at your institution who has never had an opportunity to connect with their peers, and would benefit from the SIGUCCS experience. There may be an attendee who is struggling with a situation that you, or your institution, have solved already. Please share those experiences, however trivial they may seem. From personal experience I can tell you that even the smallest interaction can be impactful for years afterwards. I look forward to seeing you in Salt Lake City, and having those conversations.

SIGUCCS Online Newsletter

Mat FelthousenI am excited to introduce the inaugural edition of the SIGUCCS online newsletter. This issue involves a few transitions, including making the newsletter content available to the entire SIGUCCS community, and not just our members. Please join me in congratulating Laurie Fox, Information Director for SIGUCCS, and the Marketing Committee in their efforts in making this new publication a reality.

SIGUCCS’ origins can be traced back to 1963 and what was primarily a Chairman’s newsletter format. In 1971 it was expanded to include updates from other officers and committees. By that point what is now the Fall Conference had been established, and the newsletter was also used for promotion.

Rather than a top-down approach to communication, we intend to ‘flip’ the newsletter. On behalf of the Marketing Committee, we want to hear from you, our audience. What do you think of this new format? What content would you like to see? This newsletter is intended to be an outlet for the community, as well as SIGUCCS leaders. We look forward to seeing what you have to share.

Mat Felthousen, ACM-SIGUCCS Chair
