January 2019 – Updates from the Chair

SIGUCCS 2019 Logo

For those of us in higher education, January is a crazy month – mid-year for our academic calendar, and a very busy time preparing for and starting a new semester. The weather in many areas also adds the challenges of bitter cold, snow, and ice. I am certainly missing Orlando on days like today!

The Call for Proposals is here! Share a presentation, panel, poster, or lightning talk at the SIGUCCS Annual Conference in New Orleans in November. Proposals are due March 8. Visit the 2019 Conference website for details.

The Executive Committee (EC) continues to meet monthly, and our committees are busy planning and working as well! Here are highlights of our accomplishments this quarter:

  • The 2019 mentoring program held its kickoff event and is officially underway.
  • Our first webinar was held this week. Mark your calendars for the upcoming webinars scheduled each month, and keep an eye on our YouTube channel for the recordings.
  • Several of the EC members participated in the ACM Webinar “Harassment at Meetings: How to Spot, Stop, and Prevent it”. ACM and SIGUCCS are committed to embracing diversity and providing a safe, welcoming environment for all. View the Policy Against Harassment at ACM Activities online. Unacceptable behavior can be reported to any EC Member.
  • We launched a reading group! This month’s discussion of Brené Brown’s Daring Greatly will be led by Mo Nishiyama and Laurie Fox in Slack and a GoToMeeting hangout. We are still ironing out the details, so stay tuned to see what happens next!

Our 2000 Penny Crane Award Recipient, Jane Caviness, was recently honored by the University of Delaware. They named their newest high performance computing (HPC) cluster “Caviness”. If you are interested in reading the details of our activity in the Executive Committee’s meeting minutes, they are posted online: Executive Committee Meeting Minutes.

Stay warm! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or suggestions – or would like to volunteer your talents and experience with us for SIGUCCS!
