
Matt Riley – University of Illinois – Chicago
As CIO, Matt is the senior IT leader at UIC and a member of the Vice Chancellor for Innovation’s leadership team responsible for all aspects of UIC’s IT – including management of UIC’s central IT team (Technology Solutions), all computing and IT services and infrastructure, education and research technologies, and IT strategy and planning. He works collaboratively with key stakeholders, including university and UI system leadership, deans, unit leaders, and college/departmental IT leaders, to align computing and information technology priorities with the strategic goals and objectives of the university, and to identify ways to advance the use of the university’s computing and information technology resources to drive innovation.
Previously, Matt served as chief technology officer at the University of Oregon where he both led Oregon’s statewide research and education network and subsequently contributed to the launch of a new, standalone, statewide network (Link Oregon). Matt led the deployment of collaborative, cloud-based services in response to COVID-19, successfully integrated the research cyberinfrastructure and classroom technology teams into the central IT organization and planned for the technology needs around Oregon hosting the world athletics championships.
Prior to the University of Oregon, Matt was chief information officer at the University of Montana, led IT for the school of humanities and sciences at Stanford, and served in various IT leadership and professional roles at the University of Redlands.
Matt serves as a member of Microsoft’s advisory board for education, is a member of Internet2’s Net+ program advisory group, served on a committee to define the business model for Internet2’s ‘Next Generation Infrastructure (NGI)’ effort, serves on the executive committee for the northern tier network consortium (NTNC), serves on Cisco’s advisory board for higher education, and is a member of Zoom’s advisory board for higher education.
Matt is a two-time graduate of the University of Redlands, earning a bachelor’s degree in business and an MBA. He is also a veteran of the United Stated Air Force.
