{"id":346,"date":"2017-04-25T02:14:28","date_gmt":"2017-04-25T02:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/siguccs.org\/Conference\/2017\/?page_id=346"},"modified":"2017-07-12T16:03:10","modified_gmt":"2017-07-12T16:03:10","slug":"plenary-general-session-information","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/siguccs.org\/Conference\/2017\/program\/plenary-general-session-information\/","title":{"rendered":"Plenary &#038; General Session Information"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Opening Plenary &#8211; Lois Brooks, Chris Ferguson, and Marty Ringle<\/h4>\n<p>Monday, October 2 &#8211; 9am<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Apocalypse Deferred: Wreaking Order in the Service Environment Through Effective Leadership<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nChris Ferguson will interview Marty Ringle and Lois Brooks regarding the challenges they face in their roles as CIOs, the ways they deal with those challenges, and the lessons they\u2019ve learned from both their successes and their mistakes. \u00a0This session will include questions from the audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-351 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/siguccs.hosting.acm.org\/Conference\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/lois_brooks_headshot_sept09.jpg\" alt=\"Lois Brooks\" width=\"140\" height=\"205\" \/>Lois Brooks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> serves as Vice Provost for Information Services &amp; CIO for Oregon State University. Prior to joining OSU in 2010, she was director of Academic Computing at Stanford University and Executive Director of the Sakai Foundation. She has been active in the higher education and technology communities, launching two multi-university initiatives (Sakai and Unizin), and serving in governance, faculty and engagement roles with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northwest Academic Computing Consortium, Unizin, EDUCAUSE, Internet2, Oracle, Ellucian and IMS Global. Brooks holds an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MBA from Columbia University, an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BS from the University of San Francisco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-353 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/siguccs.hosting.acm.org\/Conference\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/fergusonimage1.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Ferguson Headshot\" width=\"140\" height=\"179\" \/>Chris Ferguson<\/strong> retired from Pacific Lutheran University in 2012 as Associate Provost for Information &amp; Technology Services, a merged organization of library, IT, and related services and operations. \u00a0Prior to his 11 years with PLU, he held leadership positions at the University of Southern California and University of California\/San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2012, Chris has coordinated NorthWest Academic Computing Consortium\u2019s leadership development program, designing the curriculum and administering three four-day institutes for each of three 20-person cohorts to date.<\/p>\n<p>Chris received a Ph.D. in medieval and ancient history from Binghamton University, and a master\u2019s degree in library and information science from the University of Texas, both in 1981.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-352 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/siguccs.hosting.acm.org\/Conference\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/image1-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"Marty Ringle\" width=\"140\" height=\"180\" \/>Marty Ringle<\/strong> is President of the NorthWest Academic Computing Consortium (www.nwacc.org) and Chief Information Officer at Reed College (www.reed.edu). During the past twenty-five years he has consulted on technology-related issues for more than a hundred and fifty colleges, universities, corporations, foundations, and government agencies. \u00a0Prior to his arrival in the Northwest in 1989, he was chair of the computer science department and founder of the program in cognitive science at Vassar College. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Binghamton University, jointly sponsored by the T.J. Watson School of Engineering. \u00a0Marty has chaired a number of boards including EDUCAUSE, REN-ISAC, and the Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges, and has served on advisory groups for Apple, Microsoft, SCT, Addison-Wesley, the Fielding Graduate Institute, Marylhurst University, NITLE, and many other organizations. \u00a0He is currently co-leader of the EDCAUSE CIO Constituent Group, a member of the InCommon Steering Committee, and a member of the CyberSecurity sub-committee of the National Security Higher Education Advisory Board (NSHEAB).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>Closing Plenary &#8211;\u00a0Amanda Messer<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Wednesday, October 4 &#8211; 3:45pm<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><strong>Because I Said I Would<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Amanda Messer believes that every individual has the strength to become a person of their word. In this session, Amanda shares her insights and actionable ways to become better at fulfilling commitments. At a young age Amanda learned the affect that promises broken have on relationships. Her father struggled with addiction and was not good with keeping his commitments to his little girl.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda was drawn to helping start because I said I would knowing that there are other children whose lives are deeply affected by broken promises. In November of 2013, Amanda became because I said I would\u2019s first full-time employee after over a year of volunteering her time to the cause.<\/p>\n<p>As the youngest of five children, Amanda grew up in Lorain, OH. Prior to co- founding because I said I would, she worked at Hyland Software &#8211; one of Fortune magazine&#8217;s top 100 places to work in the United States. Amanda has also served as the Vice President for the Cleveland User Experience Professionals Association.
